Apples Season Is Here: 5 Tips For The Perfect Apple Pie
September heralds in peak apple season and the perfect time for a slice of homemade apple pie. Even better, how about you pick your own apples? I personally like pick my fruit and vegetable shopping at local Farmers Market. Among obvious reasons why I prefer to buy my produces at the local Farmer Market, such as buying what really is in season, I like to support my local community, engage in conversations with the farmers, learn more about the produces and yes…why not…protect the environment by avoiding buying vegetables and fruit that travel around the world.
So how can you ensure you pull off the perfect apple pie?
- It’s All About The Apples: The perfect apple pie definitely requires delicious apples. If you aren’t an expert on the different types of apples available in your local farmer market go ahead and try a few of them out. September specifically sees Egremont Russet, Orleans Reinette and Blenheim Orange varieties in season, though Granny Smith aka Green Delicious always make for the perfect apple pie. Just don’t get shot helping yourself to your neighbor’s apples.
- Crafting The Perfect Apple Pie Crust: Don’t be afraid! Making your own apple pie crust is actually incredibly easy and if you have never tried it before you will be really proud of yourself for pulling it off. The key here is using shortening, adding the water very slowly so you don’t overdo it and avoiding over mixing the dough. The perfect apple pie crust is light and flaky, not rock hard. To avoid ending up with a doughy, soggy mess at the bottom of your pie you may also want to ‘bind’ back the crust for 15 minutes before adding in your filling.
- Venting & Browning: In the mission to bake the perfect apple pie you also want to avoid volcanic type eruptions in the top of your pie or burnt edges. This means it is important to vent your pie with a few cuts in the top. You can create a pattern if you like. Then, especially if you are not pre-cooking your filling consider covering your pie with foil for at least the first 15-20 minutes of baking, then remove to get the perfect browning.
- Don’t Be Afraid To Experiment: If you don’t try new things you will never get to taste some of the best variations of the perfect apple pie. Try adding in other fruits. Apple and cherry pie is legendary, but what about rhubarb or blueberry? Blackberries and raspberries are also in season now. Don’t just experiment with the filling either, what about turning your pie into a delicious crumbles?
- Serving It Up: Remember the perfect apple pie doesn’t end with the baking. To really bring out the best taste remember a little presentation goes a long way. Plus accompanied by a small scoop of ice cream and caramel you will be sure to release the best flavors and be able to claim the crown for the perfect apple pie. And if you are of legal age in your Country to enjoy a drink, serve it up with an apple flavored cocktail.
